FAQs

  • It depends. Which we know isn’t the answer you wanted. But each movement has it’s own intricacies and there are thousands of different types of movements. If your clock just needs a simple oil to get it running, it can usually be handled in a service call for $225. Other clocks may need to be bushed, rebuilt, and timed. So it all depends on your unique clock and situation. The easiest way to get a quote is to contact us and, more importantly, send photos of your timepiece.

  • If we do need to take your clock with us for repair, we’ll ask for a small deposit to cover any parts needed and secure your place in line. You can expect to pay for the majority when the item is delivered. We want you to be thrilled with the work we do so no need to write a big check up front.

  • Again, it depends on the backlog. For a simple service call, we can usually get to you in a couple of days. Should your timepiece require a full service or more, you can expect anywhere from two to six months depending on the current backlog. We’ll give you an accurate estimate of time when agreeing to any repairs.

  • Horology is the study and measurement of time. And while it is a hobby for many people, at Houston Clock Repair, we take your property and our love of clocks very seriously. So while we appreciate the interest in horology as a hobby (what we lovingly call “tinkering”), we think it’s best to leave clock repair to the experts to prevent long-term damage to the movement.

  • Great question! While we don’t have a retail area for clock sales, we have a large network of clock collectors throughout the states. If you have something you’re looking to offload, let us know and we’ll flip through our (metaphorical) rolodex and see if we can connect you with someone in the market. Every now and then, we find something we love for ourselves, so please reach out!

  • Wherever your home is! No one wants to carry in a grandfather clock to an office, so we think it’s best to come to you. If you need additional repair, we’ll complete this in a dedicated office space within our homes. Since we don’t offer clocks for sale, only repair, we find it’s better to go without an office and pass the savings along to our customers. This means you get the expertise and reputation you’d expect but the lower pricing that works for your budget. And if you ever want to come visit your clock, you’re welcome by anytime!

  • 100%. Every repair comes with a one-year warranty against any mishaps. We do give strict instructions on keeping the clock wound and stopping it should you go on vacation, plus how to change it during daylight savings. As long as you follow these rules (and sometimes, even if you don’t) we’ll cover you. Just don’t drop it or anything crazy.

  • Honestly, maybe a little too much. Many of the clocks we deal with are rare, some dating back hundreds of years, making them priceless. For this reason, we have a $1 million policy for any mishaps. It’s the easiest decision we make for our customers each month. And while we hope we never need to use it (and certainly we haven’t yet), we’re certainly happy to share documentation with you to put your mind at ease.

  • If you’re in this section, welcome - you’re one of us!

Apprenticeships can look a lot of different ways, and we’re always happy to pass along our knowledge to you. However, it takes years to get fully up to speed on how to repair a clock. So this answer highly depends on what you want to learn. Give us a call or use our contact form to reach out. We’ve taught people to repair their own clocks, brought on apprentices that later started their own company, and even taught amateurs enough to be dangerous. If a love of clocks moves you, we’d love to talk.

  • We love a good watch, but it’s not for us. However, another family member does. We recommend Promenade Clocks in Dallas. We think Frederick is just great (though we recognize our own bias).
